Soccer mom and demon fighter Barbara Everette is back in an intricately interwoven monster noir thriller, the sequel to bestselling Princess of Wands.

Barbara Everette has a problem. It seems Janea, Barbara’s assistant and the Foundation for Love and Universal Faith’s best operative, has been thrown into a coma by some very nasty magic she’s stirred up. Barbara must track down the perpetrators and break the spell or Janea’s soul will be forever lost on the astral plane. Oh, and if she can’t break the spell, zombies will destroy all mankind.

Meanwhile, Janea, a high-dollar call girl, stripper and High Priestess of Freya when she isn’t fighting demons, must contend with a spiritual journey of her own. Where to locate one’s true inner essence? At a science fiction convention, of course. But when rescuers pursue Janea into her vision of a geeky alternate reality, we find this is one science fiction convention where the Guest of Honor could turn out to be Death Himself.

Queen of Wands Special Circumstances Book 2 eBook John Ringo

I'm a total John Ringo addict and I was getting desperate waiting for something new. I decided to try book one of the Special Circumstances series, even though it's not the sort of theme I usually enjoy.

I was delighted to find that Ringo's ability to write moving combat scenes carried over into this story about Barbara Everette, a devout Christian MILF who channels God's power to kill demons. She is also an amazing martial artist and expert shooter.

It was a bit odd to have a Ringo main character who suppressed their sexuality, but at least Ringo made her beautiful with big boobs. Nice touch.

Of course I had to read Book Two and I enjoyed it almost as much. There was a lot of writing devoted to the goings on at DragonCon, which was kind of interesting, but often got in the way of the story. I felt there was also quite a bit of long winded preaching in Book Two, but I still really enjoyed it.

Now, would someone please slap Ringo and tell him to get busy writing more Paladin of Shadows books? Thanks!

Queen of Wands Special Circumstances Book 2 eBook John Ringo Reviews

I only just found this a short while ago. Special Circumstances book 1, Princess of Wands, is one of only a few books I've read 3 times or more. It's just that enjoyable. Queen of Wands has stayed true to it, and was just fantastic. I admit to being a little shocked at the end of the first... segment, at the appearance of characters from a certain science fiction show, of which I am a fan. I only expect to see stuff like that in fanfic. Makes me wonder if Barbara or others from this series will make an appearance in the television show (in which I am quite far behind, unfortunately) or if it's just a one-way, one-time crossover.

Hopefully, this isn't the end!
This is the sequel to Princess of Wands. This is a very worthy successor to that book. Ringo will acknowledge that this is not his favorite genre. Many of his fans believed he would never write this book. Well I am happy to report that we were wrong. Not only that, but this is much better than we could have hoped for. Not only are the main characters back, but they are more vibrant than before. The final plot twist is a complete surprise! The discussion of religion is better thought out. I was very much in agreement with his conclusions. I have been to Dragon*Con once back when it was held over the 4th of July holiday weekend. His description of the feel of the convention is quite accurate. If you can't find something of interest you are brain dead! He is also correct that it is family friendly during the day. After 9 PM send the little ones to bed. After midnight send the prudes to bed. I went for the gaming, the authors, and the parties. Take at least one day off to recover! Trust me on this. Me I take a week off after the con. Book one is a 2 part story and it had to be that way! Both parts work and it would be much worse as 2 short stories. The second book is a master piece. Here we have a serious discussion of religion as seen through the characters eyes, and a serious debate on the importance of religion in America. My Mother would object, like all bible-thumpers, but open minded believers of God, whatever the beliefs they may subscribe to, could live with this debate. One thing that I like is Ringo mixes light with serious moments and does it smoothly. This may be his saving grace with this series. I have seen other authors stumble on this genre, one part religion, and one part modern paranormal. He seems to find a natural balance between the two dichotomies. I think, whether you're a fan of Ringo or paranormal romance, you will enjoy this series and, more importantly, this book. I also hope that Ringo returns to this series in the future!
This is the second and (so far) final book in this series. It tells the story of Barbara Everette, a suburban soccer mom who has become essentially an avatar of God. In my experience, this is a one-of-a-kind series in that it treats Barbara's religious faith just as seriously as Barbara does. This book, however, does indulge itself in a bit more humor than the first book.

Like the first book, there are three stories here. The first story involves Barbara investigating mysterious events in Chattanooga, where her friend Janea has been found in a sort of magical coma. This story was quite good. The second story involves Janea's spiritual journey while in the coma, as she finds herself at a version of Dragon Con in the astral planes. I was less impressed with this story. The third story involves Barbara and Janea hunting monsters in a system of caves. This story started off really well, but then the author took a questionable turn toward the Apocalypse. Literally. That was a bit much for me.

All in all, this is a unique series that works surprisingly well. Perhaps the author will return to Barbara Everette one day.
